The chimney is one of the most important elements of your home. Its main purpose is to vent smoke and gasses, such as carbon monoxide, from your fireplace or furnace; additionally, it can sometimes also be used as an architectural or decorative feature. Because of its importance in terms of safety and aesthetic, having a properly functioning chimney is essential.

The following are some common types of chimney repairs that may be needed in order to keep your chimney functioning safely:

* Cracked or crumbling bricks. Bricks on the outside of your chimney can crack, crumble and deteriorate over time due to exposure to sunlight, water and extreme temperature variations. Unfortunately, this deterioration can extend to the interior lining as well if not addressed immediately.

* Chimney cap damage or rusting. The protective cap on the top of your chimney performs several functions, including preventing water from getting into your flue and firebox. However, over time it may get damaged or start rusting, which will allow water to enter where it shouldn’t be. In addition to causing damage to the interior of your home, this will also increase the risk of a chimney fire occurring.

* Loose mortar between bricks. Old houses can be made to appear newer with simple tricks. Loose mortar between bricks, for example, can be scooped out and replaced with a new layer of mud-based material that binds the bricks together better. The result is a house that looks like it’s been tuckpointed ever since it was built.

Since the mortar in your chimney is loose, you should probably re-point it. Repairing the mortar in a chimney is fairly straightforward. Here are the steps that our chimney repair expert follow:

– Parging and Tuckpointing

Parging: This is a process where a coloured or white cement based material is applied to concrete block, stone or brick foundations in order to give a uniform and clean appearance. It can be applied with a brush or trowel depending on the desired finish. Parging can also be used to fill in small voids and cracks that appear over time and which are not structural in nature.

Tuckpointing: This is a process whereby mortar joints that have deteriorated due to exposure over time are removed using hand tools and then replaced with new mortar. The new mortar is typically similar in colour to the brick being worked on but it can also be made more prominent by using a different colour so as to create an artistic effect. Tuckpointing can also be used when there are no existing mortar joints (i.e., veneer bricks) in order to create mortar joints on previously unsighted masonry surfaces.

We rebuild your chimney with new bricks, tuckpointing and parging, and ensure that your fireplace is safe to use. Contact us today!
