Tuckpointing is a tedious technique that has been used for centuries to repair and restore brick or stone masonry. Tuckpointing involves the removal of mortar from the joints to a depth of 3/8 inch, then replacing the removed material with new mortar. This must be done in such a way that the joints are not enlarged beyond their original width.
A thorough cleaning of the existing masonry is essential to ensure proper bonding between old and new materials. Raking out or grinding out will be used to clean mortared joints, depending on the age and condition of the masonry. For example, older historical buildings with soft mortar will require raking out, while harder mortars may need grinding.
In order for tuckpointing to stand out as a decorative feature, it is important that the new mortar match the color and texture of the original mortar as closely as possible. If a strong contrast is desired, another method – called pointing – may be used instead of tuckpointing.
